Mohan Krishna Indraganti’s latest screwball comedy Ami Thumi narrates the story of what happens when a stranger walks into the lives of two young couples, who are trying their best to get married. Although it falls under the sub-genre of confusion comedy, which has become quite popular in Telugu cinema, Indraganti fills the story with plenty of surprises and colourful characters.

The story begins with Deepika (Eesha) and Ananth (Adivi Sesh) dreaming about getting married to each other. However, we are told that Deepika’s father Janardhan (Thanikella Bharani) is against their marriage, and he, in turn, prefers Sree Chilipi (Vennela Kishore), a prospective groom from a rich family in Vizag. Meanwhile, Deepika brother Vijay (Srinivas Avasarala) is in love with Maya (Aditi), daughter of Janardhan’s arch-rival. When Sree Chilipi goes to meet Deepika, he’s shocked that the description that he had heard about Deepika doesn’t match with the person whom he actually meets. The rest of the story is about how the two young couples manage to unite in the end, with ample help from Sree Chilipi.

First things first, the film is based on an idea of what happens when names of people are interchanged, which is pretty similar to the theme of Mohan Krishna Indraganti’s own film Ashta Chemma. Eesha plays a feisty young girl, who is not afraid to oppose her own father, and she nails the Telangana accent quite well. On the other hand, Thanikella Bharani plays the role of a jolly old man, who doesn’t think twice before breaking into a dance to celebrate the occasion. Then, there’s Adivi Sesh and Srinivas Avasarala who keep their performances subtle and there’s rarely a moment when they go overboard. Adiiti, on the other hand, is torn between her love for Srinivas Avasarala and her own father.

However, the film belongs to Vennela Kishore, who single-handedly turns the film into a joyful experience with his hilarious antics. Although he has played the role of a comedian in several films, in Ami Thumi, he’s the one who drives the whole narrative. Mohan Krishna Indraganti writes most of his finest lines and scenes for Vennela Kishore, who delivers a solid performance. There are plenty of scenes where Vennela Kishore’s innocence is all it takes to make you laugh like never before. The comedy is clean and there are plenty of gems like Vennela Kishore referring to ‘Kallu’ as ‘Organic Scotch’, or even that gag where he says ‘Dammmmnnnnn’ to a deadly effect.

Ami Thumi is the kind of film where the characters overshadow the story and that’s what makes it so memorable. It’s unlikely that you’ll forget Sree Chilipi anytime soon and that character alone makes the whole film an experience worth remembering for a long time. Go watch the film. You’ll definitely walk out with a big smile on your face and it’ll also convince you why Mohan Krishna Indraganti is one of the interesting filmmakers we have in the industry today.
